REMEMBERING GEORGE FLOYD

There will be a paddle out this Sunday, June 7 at Ala Moana Beach Park in memory of George Floyd. Floyd was a 46-year-old black man who died in Minneapolis, Minnesota after Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Organizers are asking participants to bring lei, flowers or a candle if you choose to wait onshore. The paddle out begins at 6 p.m. and will take place near the volleyball court at Ala Moana Beach Park.

NEW BUSINESSES IN KAKAʻAKO

As restaurants prepare to reopen for dine-in services on June 5, here’s a look at some of the new businesses you’ll see in the area:

  • HMART: It’s finally here! The popular Korean grocery store opened its Kakaʻako location on May 28. The new store features a food hall on its second level with international chefs and food concepts, including Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. No need to pack up for a long drive to the North Shore anymore! On the first floor, you’ll find produce, meat, seafood, and Asian groceries and housewares. Located at 458 Keawe Street. Parking is on the street or validated at SALT at Our Kakaʻako or The Flats at Puʻunui.

  • SUN TEA MIX: Need a boba fix? Sun Tea Mix opened right before the stay-at-home, work-from-home order began in March. While they specialize in handcrafted fruit teas and smoothies, they also offer delicious, fluffy souffle pancakes. You also may order online and pick up in-store at www.sunteamix808.com. Located at the ground level of 400 Keawe Street.

  • QING MU: One of three restaurants developed by Kevin Aoki (of Doraku and Bluetree Cafe) at The Collection, this new establishment offers Vietnamese and Singaporean cuisine. Offerings on the soft-opening menu include Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches, vermicelli bowls, and pho with more offerings to come. Check out the menu or order online at www.qingmunoodles.com.

WHERE TO BUY MASKS

Many establishments are still “no mask, no service” in Kakaʻako, and if you need some new ones, there are several options:

  • KAHALA: Known for aloha shirts, this boutique at SALT offers a four pack for $42. Each mask is reversible and made from a cotton/rayon/linen blend. You might find an aloha shirt to match. Available in-store or online at www.kahala.com.

  • URBAN ISLAND SOCIETY: Located at SALT, this boutique offers masks individually for $10 each or a four pack for $32. Available in black or three easy-to-wear prints. Shop in store or online at www.urbanislandsociety.com.

  • KIRA HAWAII: This boutique at the ground level of 400 Keawe Street carries masks for adults and keiki (they sell out FAST!), including filters and masks from the brand Dippin’ Daisy’s Swimwear, that donates one mask to a first responder for each mask you purchase. Available in-store or online at www.kirahawaii.com.
